  1. By the square foot/meter. Determine what R value is needed and then calculate the thickness required. Fiberglass bats come in different widths to fit you needs. Two layers perpendicular to each other would be best. Other options are blow in fiberglass, cellulose or a mix of both. Also open or closed cell spray in foam is the best but more expensive as it is installed by pros. Good Luck

Measure the outside dimension of your house, just remember that you will need to install roof shoots so that you don't block the shoffit vents, there has to be a airway to the ridge, That's if your home has a ridge vent, if you have the square or round roof vents you will still want the shoots, also depending on where you live R19 should be fine unless you live in the Northern area of the Country then you can add another layer.
