I have some violets, but I would love to have more plants, but I have no idea how to propagate them. I would like to do so on my own - far more interesting than going to a nursery

  1. very easy to do. just pick a leaf from the base and it will grow.

I remember dipping the tip in rooting powder but don't think it necessary. just plant it in a pot and it will root itself.

    pure magic!

  2. First, get some scratch ...

  3. If you decide to grow it in water here is a tip, put a piece of aluminum foil over a small jar of water and poke a hole in it put your leaf in the hole it will support it until it roots. I like to use a clear jar you can watch the roots grow. Just make sure that you  change the water about once a week to keep it fresh. Use tepid water not cold, oh one more thing put a drop or two of peroxide in the water it helps keep it clean, and help it root better. Give it a try

Also you could check with friends and family and see if they have any leaves they would like to share, that way you will have lots of variety.

  4. Remove a live leaf, all green.  Dip it in rootone and soak it in water or prepared soil.  You can watch the roots grow in water, if in soil, keep in a plastic bag near a window not in sun until the roots grow and it starts to produce another leaf.  (Don't let the plastic touch anything, using straws to support it. Open the plastic bag and let some air in, gradually exposing it until you remove the bag entirely.  Keep an eye on the moisture level.
