  1. Treading water it is slow but you can direct yourself without using alot of energy.


  2. floating on your back.  This is why one technique in teaching kids to do freestyle (front crawl) is to roll over on the back to get air and rest.  When you are on your front it takes a lot of energy to lift the head out of the water, when you do the feet sink and now you are on a 45 degree angle in the water and not able to move very quickly.  Rotary breathing (breathing to the side) makes this easier however it isn't the easiest way to learn to swim.  Bilateral rotary breathing (freestyle) is the fastest way to swim.  It isn't taught to beginners, only intermediate swimmers
