I recently purchased a very calm baby lavender corn snake. It was very sweet, and didn't mind being handled. But I went on a week vacation and then came back home opened the cage and all the sudden it hissed at me. I keep on trying to hold it but every time it hisses at me and looks like it's trying to bite me. I know that this is just a stage and she'll grow out of it but I want to hold her with out her biting me.

Please help! (she's 5 months old)

  1. The most important part is DO NOT put her down if she hisses and strikes at you.  If she bites you... so be it.  She is small and it will not hurt that bad.  However, if you respond like she wants to you (retreat when she hisses and strikes) she will continue to do it because it works to get you to leave her alone.

    Best of luck.

  2. they can be defensive when they're young but it's nothing to worry about. Even if it did bite you, it won't hurt. Actually, you'd probably not even feel anything. Just be confident w/ it and typically once you pick it up, it should be fine in your hands. I have never had a problem w/ a corn snake in regards to biting, all the ones I've had have been very nice. My baby king snakes are very defensive as well but when i pick them up, they're fine. If you're realy scared about being bit, just put on a yellow cleaning glove to pick it up initially. If it did bite, it won't go through the glove. That will help give you confidence, allow you to pick it up and help tame it down. The best thing to do is to handle it in regards to taming. If it is very new, also give it a little time to acclaimate to it's surroundings but it shoudl come around

  3. If she's really new, give her a couple of weeks to settle into her new home.  Then just hold her for a few minutes a day in the beginning.  This is a typical reaction from corns when they feel threatened.  Frequent gentle handling will over come this in time.    A good site with a behavior section on corns:
