I have an overgrown cactus that's just begging to be transplanted. I have a brown thumb so I want to do as little damage to the plant as well as to my fingers!

  1. I watched an episode of Paul James' Gardening By The Yard on HGTV where he gave this tip when transplanting a cactus plant that I have used and it works.  He wraps the cactus with several layers of newspaper until when you press against the plant the prickers don't come through the paper wrapped around it.  He then secures the newspaper with a bungie cord (for a large one) or a rubber band (for a small one).  Use the spade to wedge between the plant's dirt and the container to loosen the container away from the soil.  I find this easier to do if I moisten the soil first.  You can then have someone hold the container while you use the newspaper wrap to grab the plant, gently pulling it from the container.  The person holding the pot may have to use the spade to continue loosening the roots from the container but eventually it will come out of the pot.  Then you support the plant while your friend supports the root ball to either put the plant into the ground or into a larger container.  I just replanted a cactus that was about 7 foot tall using this method and didn't get pricked!
