Yeah, I'd say take a train. I don' tknow much about them, but i've taken a train from san mateo to the ball park in SF.

if you can, take 280 south to san jose. :D you could also try 101 heading towards steven creek blvd, then make your way from there.

catch the Cal-Train on 4th st by the ballpark in The City. it'll take you to S.J.
