  4. Japan has a temperate climate and is heavily forested.  About 75% percent of Japan's land area is mountainous. The remaining 25% is coastal plains and basins. The terrain ascends from sea level to 1500 - 5000 feet on the Sea of Japan.  The interior region's altitude is 5000 -10,000 feet. The highest point is Mount Fuji at 12,388 feet.  Tokyo, by comparison, is only 59 feet above sea level.

Land area - 145,883 square miles

Japan's population is concentrated on the coast.  Greater Tokyo is home to over 35 million people.
