    The first measurement, after literally years of painstaking surveying and trigonometric computations, came in at exactly 29,000 feet, but another 2 feet were added so people wouldn't think 29,000 was a rounded figure. Everest's height is still increasing as the Indian continental plate collides with Asia and is now thought to be as much as 29,035 feet. Portable GPS units carried to the peak itself are the latest method to refine the figure.
