  1. It's nicknamed the "Winged Helmet"

    .

When Herbert Orin "Fritz" Crisler came to coach Michigan (from Princeton) he wanted to give Michigan's QB an advantage in seeing their receivers, so he had their helmets painted with the design, introduced in 1938. The Michigan football team has worn a version of his design ever since. Crisler had first introduced the winged helmet design at Princeton in 1935; while Princeton abandoned the design when he left, it resumed using it in 1998.

The most beautiful helmet in all of football.

  4. It's a winged helmet....employed in the early fifties so the qb could identify his receivers more easily...the helmets were solid black before the intro of the wings.
