I am currently doing a project about endangered species. I need to describe the "endangered species act:" and when did it become a law and what does it protect? i really need details for this one and PLEASE SITE THE SOURCES! i really need your guy's help i apprciate your guy's help.   1. The Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA, amended in 1982 and 1988), makes it illegal for Americans to import or trade in any product made from an endangered or threatened species unless it is used for an approved scientific purpose or to enhance the survival of the species.

    The ESA authorizes the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to identify and list the endangered and threatened ocean species and the USFWS to identify and list all other endangered and threatened species.  These species cannot be hunted, killed, collected, or injured in the United States.
