It works according to "10 percent law" that each organism at next level gets 1/10 of the energy after consuming that organism.

the producers take 1% of the sun's energy and turn in 10% of the total energy in its own body to pass to the next consumers...at every trophic level 10 % of the energy is passed to the the next consumer..so the longer the food chain the lesser the energy.

but when chemicals are passed on to the nest trophic levels..the chemicals get acummulated at each level and pass on to the next.the last consumer gets the most..this is called bio-magnification...
