I am in the process of selling a share in a Cessna Superhawk. I am trying to calcuate the estimated hourly cost of an overhaul based on TBO (2K hrs) and the cost of the overhaul.

  1. cal is correct, good luck with selling it, the aircraft market isnt exactly great right now.

  2. Between $10,000 and $15,000 depending on the type of O-360 and the accessories desired.

Figure on about $5-$8/hr for an overhaul reserve (on top of maintenance reserve).

  3. There are several levels of major overhaul: factory remanufactured by Lycoming to new engine standards, a non-factory overhaul to factory new tolerances, and an overhaul to "field" tolerances. The highest level is essentially the same as buying a new engine from the factory since most of the parts are replaced with new ones and everything meets factory new standards.  The lowest level replaces and repairs only the parts required to bring the engine to an acceptable level of airworthiness. The difference in price ranges from a high of about $26,000 plus shipping and installation (say $30k total) down to a low of about $12,000.  And then there's also the prop and accessories to think about, plus prices always rise over time. Figuring that you can go the full 2,000 hours (not likely) without any expensive repairs such as a top overhaul or replacing a cylinder or two, a fairly conservative "maintenance reserve" rule of thumb for the O-360 is to figure about $12 - $15 per flight hour toward eventual overhaul.
