Sr. unfortunately lost his life on Sunday February 18, 2001 during the Daytona 500. He was hit and killed during a late race wreck. It was because of this that all drivers are now required to wear full face helmets, since Sr. was known for wearing the open face helmet. Also, due to this tragic accident, the hans device and safer walls were implemented into Nascar. And, lastly, what many people forget, is that Michael Waltrip won the race.
