  1. The exact components of each program will vary depending on the university and disciple.  MPhil is not a common degree in the US for example.

An MPhil takes 1-2 years.  You write a masters thesis, which usually takes 6-12 months to write.

A PhD takes 3-7 years.  You write a dissertation, which usually takes several years to write.

A PhD is a much more rigerous degree, requiring much more research.  Often students complete a masters degree before begining their doctoral work.  The number of courses vary greatly by school and program, the big difference is the depth of the research.

  2. Hi,

I have found these two difference for it. Please go through it and tell me what your opinion about this answer.;) obtain the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), a candidate is expected to investigate a topic and to make an original contribution to knowledge. Research at MPhil level should represent an extension of existing knowledge although the demands of originality and sustained systematic enquiry are less than those required for PhD. In terms of length of thesis, a MPhil is expected to be in the range 20,000 - 40,000 words (according to subject) whereas a PhD thesis would be in the 40,000 - 80,000 word range.

The difference between these lies in the level of contribution to the subject it demonstrates, and thus also (among other things) the length of the work produced. The Doctorate is the higher award, representing both scholarship and an original contribution to scholarly knowledge. The MPhil degree is defined in terms of an 'extension' to knowledge in a field.

  3. A Master of Philosophy is a graduate degree in philosophy.  The term "Doctor of Philosophy" is MUCH broader and applies to many fields outside of philosophy...I have a PhD in business...others have a Ph.D. in biology.

If you're talking about a Doctor of Philosophy IN Philosophy, the answer to your question depends on the institution to some degree.  Some schools would require original research at both levels (thesis v. dissertation)...the thesis is usually shorter and less rigorous.  Other schools use comprehensive exams or oral exams at the master's level and reserve the original dissertation for the doctorate.  Courses required will also differ depending on the institution but in general, the doctoral-level courses will require more reading and writing and will be more heavily geared toward preparing you to do original research in the field while the master's will be more practical.
