  2. You are a long way from the area of visibility. In the U.S. the only place that will see it is northeast Maine

Unfortunately, it won't be visible from the Bay Area.  According to the Exploratorium website (I can see how you might have gotten that impression, if you'd visited the museum recently--they're surely promoting this heavily!), "The moon’s umbral shadow will fall on parts of Canada, Greenland, the Arctic Ocean, Russia, Mongolia, and China."  You can watch it on their live webcast here: http://www.exploratorium.edu/eclipse/200...

    Anyway, it's disappointing, but I think it's pretty cool that the Exploratorium'll be broadcasting it live.
