i know that right now 1 US dollar is equal to about 99.98 Yen but what i'm trying to figure out is if the actuall value of 99.98 yes is equal to $1. As in if i were to buy something in the US for $1 would it acually cost 99.98 Yen in Japan or more or less. I think there's a word for this but i'm not sure what it is.

  1. 1 dollar,.= 99.93 yen

well.. you are talking about the cost of life.

5 dollars might buy you some cheap meal in the u.s .

a cheap meal in japan is like 10 dollars, may be more..

so almost everything costs twice as much.

except for gas, which 4 to 5 times more expensive.

tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in the world. but the other ones are not cheap.

    so.. 1 dollar=99.93 yen

but comparing the cost of living in both countries you could say.

"if it costs a dollar in the u.s= it might cost 190 yen in japan."

  2. it's actually a different rate, it's not like we maek 100x more than them, tis' liek comparing dollars and cents, litarlly.

  3. here is a calculator it works both ways.

  4. one dollar is equal   to 20 yen

  5. 1=80000000

  6. the exchange rate will be 64.6 of a US dollar

  7. Yes $1 is 99.98 yen.

You've got the exchange rate right.

  8. if purchasing something for $1 and paying in Japanese Yen, it would cost slightly more than 100 Yen, because you always lose on the exchange rate.  There is always a discount in currency when it is exchanged in foreign purchases.  Traveler's Cheques eliminate a bit of this, as you generally get higher exchange rates for Cheques versus cash, but again, you will always see a discount.  This is the reason many people will tell you "only exchange what you'll use when in a foreign country", because exchanging back, you'll always get shortchanged a little...
