  1. Feathers hold heat very well. How do you think some birds survive when it's cold?

  2. They aren't warm themselves, but are such good insulators that your body heat causes a severe spike in temperature when you cover up.

  3. Their insulative properties are due to the presence of many small spaces in which air is stationary, which retards the rate at which heat can flow by convection. Foam works on the same principle.

They feel warm because your body heat can't easily escape. Apiece of metal, by contrast, feels cold because it's a good conductor of heat.
