  1. It is the watermark. It is a portrait of Lord Ilay. It is visible from both sides. Hold it up to the light.

  2. Its the original engraving of the facade of the Bank's Registered office at 36 St Andrew Square, used on earlier versions of the Royal bank's £1 notes.
