  1. Some substances have such a pungent odour that you can smell one part per trillion, and some moths have a more acute sense of smell than us, which they use to find mates.  In some cases a male can sense a female 3 km. away.

  5. It depends on what it is.  Some smells just permeate an entire region.  Like a town with a lot of livestock smells like c**p.  The entire town of Gilroy, CA, smells like garlic because they grow so much of it.   You can smell a fire from a long, long way off.
