  1. The fastest aircraft is the X-43 which reached a speed of Mach 9.8 with a max altitude of 110,000 feet. It is unmanned, flown by remote control and a NASA toy. The goal is to achieve Mach 10.

    The fasted manned aircraft is the X-15 with a speed of Mach 6.72 with a max altitude of 354,200 feet.

    The SR-71 is the fastest manned airplane with a publicly released speed of Mach 3.2+ and a max altitide of 85,000+ feet. It is the fastest pure airplane, followed closely by the Russian MIG 25 Foxbat, at Mach 3.2, with an altitude record of 123,000+ feet.

    The SR-71 will fly significantly faster than the public release speed of Mach 3.2

    The F-22 is an air superiority fighter with a max speed of only Mach 1.8 - way below a lot of other aircraft.

  3. A "true jet"? Your gonna probably be looking at the MiG-25 unfortunately. The blackbird at speed functioned more like a ramjet than a true jet. I always wondered how much of that air going past those inlet cones bypassed the first stage compressors and went straight to the burner can and the blower? things that make go "hum" how fast did it really go? If you read between the lines in the books like sled driver it makes you wonder. Long live stupid loud and bad a__ aircraft like that...

    The x-43 is not a true jet its a ramjet. And the mig 25 did mach 3+ at the cost of the engine which was trashed at the end of that flight. It could only sustain 2.8.
