  1. Definitely the X-15.  Even though it had to be dropped from another aircraft, the X-15 was manned and operated under its own power and could be piloted (And landed like an airplane).

The fastest non-rocket powered aircraft would otherwise be the SR-71.

  2. airbreathing jet engine aircraft is the SR 71 blackbird

airbreathing scramjet (rocket) engine aircraft is the X 15

the fastest glider has to go to the space shuttle, when it re-enters the atmosphere

  3. The fastest air-breathing jet airplane is the XR-71 Blackbird.

The fastest rocket airplane was the X-15 research aircraft of the 1960s.  (Not an air-breathing scramjet, by the way, but just a pure rocket plane.)

The fastest aircraft of all types is the Space Shuttle, at 18,000 MPH.

  4. I think Dangerdug is wrong, the North American X-15 is the fastest

    these are the Performance facts.

    Maximum speed: Mach 6.70 (4,520 mph / 7,274 km/h)

    Range: 280 mi (450 km)

    Service ceiling 67 mi (354,330 ft / 108 km)

    Rate of climb: 60,000 ft/min (18,000 m/min)

    Wing loading: 170 lb/ft² (829 kg/m²)

    Thrust/weight: 2.07

The Performance facts for SR71 is :

    Maximum speed: Mach 3.2+ (2,200+ mph, 3530+ km/h) at 80,000 ft (24,000 m)

    Range:

    Combat: 2,900 nmi (5400 km)

    Ferry: 3,200 nmi (5,925 km)

    Service ceiling 85,000 ft (25,900m, 16 mi)

    Rate of climb: 11,810 ft/min (60 m/s)

    Wing loading: 94 lb/ft2 (460 kg/m2)

    Thrust/weight: 0.382

  5. SR-71

  6. SR 71, also known as the Blackbird.. used for secret photo ops, high above the earth, so far that its almost in space. Pilots must wear a high pressure suit, almost like an astronaut suit.

  7. Well, obviously, the X43a and the saleen s7!!!

  8. The fastest winged manned vehicle ever flown other than the Space Suttle was the X15. On October 3, 1967, Pete Knight of the U.S. Air Force flew the experimental rocket plane to mach 6.70 or 4,519 MPH on flight 188 of the series.
