I assume it would have been in a space craft?

  1. According to the 2001 Guinness World Records Apollo 10 has the record for the highest speed attained by a manned vehicle: 39,897 km/h (11.08 km/s or 24,791 mph). The speed record was set during the return from the Moon on 26 May 1969.

    The crew members were

    Thomas P. Stafford  - Commander

John W. Young - Command Module Pilot

Eugene A. Cernan - Lunar Module Pilot

  2. According to Wikipedia, '... According to the 2001 Guinness World Records Apollo 10 has the record for the highest speed attained by a manned vehicle: 39,897 km/h (11.08 km/s or 24,791 mph). The speed record was set during the return from the Moon on 26 May 1969. ...'

  3. About 25,000 mph, going to and from the moon.

  4. Right around 25,000 miles per hour. That's Earth's escape velocity, and that's how fast the Apollo spacecraft had to be going to get to the moon. A total of 27 men have gone that fast.

  5. Over 11.2 km/s or 40,320 km/h, that's the escape velocity of the Earth's gravitational pull! The Earth is actually revolving around the Sun at approximately 30 km/s and our Sun is rotating around our galaxy at approximately 200 km/s!

  6. This has got to be some of the Apollo astronauts. On re-entry of their command module to the Earth's atmosphere at the end of their mission they had been falling from the height of the moon's orbit. IIRC, Apollo 10 was the fastest re-entry of all the Apollo missions.

As it hit the top of the earth's atmosphere and started slowing down, Apollo 10's command module, with astronauts Thomas Stafford, John Young, and Eugene Cernan inside, was traveling at about 11.1 km/sec, which works out to 6.9 miles/sec, or 24,830 miles per hour.

  7. Since you already mentioned space, we'll stay up there.

The shuttle and other capsules in similar orbits travel around 17 to 18,000 MPH so all astronauts who've orbited the Earth have gone about this same speed. The only ones who went significantly faster were any of the Apollo astronauts who went to the moon since their spacecraft had to go faster to escape Earth's gravity. They reached speeds near 25,000 MPH.
