  1. Rome to Messina is about 7.5 hours on the train (45.50 euro 2nd class - or 36.80 if the amica fare is available).

You can fly from Rome to Palermo in about an hour (47.56 - 62.66 on Windjet) or Catania on Windjet of Blu-express (flights as low as 29 euro some days).

The train from Palermo to Messina is 3 hours. The train from Catania is about an hour and a half.

The fastest way would be to fly to Catania and take the train from there, but it probably isn't a lot faster than the train when you consider the time spent in the airport (check-in, security, loading the plane, getting baggage) and the time to transfer between the plane and the train.

  2. The fastest is a plane, but, the best way is to go to the Port of Naples and take a ferry across.

  3. Rome to Naples.  Then take the ferry to Messina.
