  1. Do you mean physically get a licence or how long will it take for you to pass your driving test?

You apply to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) for a provisional driving licence by using form D1 which you can get from a Post Office or from http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Mot...

It will cost you £50.00 and will take between 2- 4 weeks for the licence to be sent to you.

Once you have your provisional driving licence you can start taking driving lessons http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-choose-a-d... .

The Driving Standards Agency gudelines are ""Those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice..." . As to how long that will take will depend on how easy you find learning to drive and the availability of yourself and your instructor for driving lessons.

You need to study for and pass your Theory Test - http://www.squidoo.com/theory-and-hazard... . There's usually a wait of approx 2-4 weeks for an appointment.

Once you've passed your Theory Test and when your driving instructor says you're ready, you can apply for your driving test (Practical Test) http://www.squidoo.com/practical-driving... There's usually a waiting list of 4-12 weeks for an appointment.

So realistically, you're talking about anywhere between 2 - 6 months minimum depending on how long it takes you to get appointments for the tests and how many driving lessons you can have/how quickly you learn.

I do not recommend the sort of intensive learning to drive course where you drive all day every day and take your test at the end of, say a week...learning to drive doesn't come naturally to everyone, it's mentally and physically tiring and requires a great deal of concentration and time to consolidate and practice what you have learnt. The fact that pass rates for people taking intensive courses are considerably lower than for those who spread their learning over a period of time, illustrates that this is not a particularly effective way of learning.

Your aim is to learn how to be a safe driver for life...
