how long do you think the drive would be. im leaving on a friday at about 5:30pm. hows the traffic going into or around the city

You could take Metro North to Grand Central.  Then take the S subway to Times Square and then take the 1 train downtown to Penn Station where you can take a NJ Transit train on the North Jersey Coast Line.  From Manhattan, it's just over 2 hours on the train.

Driving on a Friday across the GWB is notorious for delays.  Then you'd still be fighting heavy traffic shorebound for the rest of the trip.

Take 95 south into NJ.  Exit for the Garden State Parkway.  After the tolls take the Parkway South to Exit 98.  Take Hwy. 34 south to Hwy. 35 to PPB.
