Renee Richards.  She was born as Richard Raskind on August 19, 1934.  She was originally not allowed to play in the US Open in 1976 but fought to the New York Supreme Court, who then allowed her entry in 1977.  She had her s*x-change operation in 1975.  In time, she reached a career-high ranking of 20th in February 1979.

Anna-I believe that is why she was banned in 1976 and before, but when she had her operation, she did LEGALLY become a female, so using that argument they probably couldn't stop her.  Doesn't having such an operation kind of make you female though because the hormone levels balance out?  In any case, I'm surprised (if she did in fact have the strength of a male) that she never reached number 1...

The funny thing is that she sucked too! She wanted to get a s*x change and started on the women's tour and people originally thought she would have an advantage, but she didn't at all!!
