In UK Knighting a distinguished and eminent man means bestowing the title of 'sir', on him. Is there any similiar arrangement for women?

  1. I believe so, but I might be wrong. Basically, instead of being called, "sir", you are called "lady". And please note, you can still be knighted if you're a foreign national, but you can't be called "sir" or "lady" unless you're a British citizen.

  2. A ladyship.

You have to understand that women were considered all damsels in distress at the time of knighthood.

    hmmmmm......ooh ooh i know Xena,Warrior Princess?

  11. Yes.   It is the title of Dame.

  12. I believe it is the title 'Dame'

  13. yes, a Dame.

  14. "Knighthood" refers to an honour conferred on a  person by Her Majesty the Queen, in appreciation of the person's eminence. To my knowledge, there appears to be no other terminology used when the honour is conferred on a woman. One may possibly affix "Madam" while addressing women knighted so.

  15. Dame

  16. The ceremony for a woman being knighted is the same as knighting a man, however, a woman will be called the "Dame Grand Cross" rather than the "Knight Grand Cross" traditionally for men. Wives of knights, however, are entitled to the honorific "Lady" before their husband's surname. However, the husbands of Dames have no honorific.

  17. A dame is the equivalent of a knight,so a damehood is equivalent to a knighthood. From http://www.royal.gov/uk

"A knighthood (or a damehood, its female equivalent) is one of the highest honours an individual in the United Kingdom can achieve."

  18. Knighthood was not given to females.

  19. madam

  20. Its same for women. But instead of sir its madam or something like that

  21. Descended from mediaeval chivalry, knights exist both within the orders of chivalry as well as in a class known as Knights Bachelor. Regular recipients include High Court judges and senior civil servants. Knighthood carries the title Sir; the female equivalent Dame only exists within the orders of chivalry.
