  1. An electrical filament is a thread of metal, usually tungsten, which is used to convert electricity into light in incandescent light bulbs (as developed in 1874 by Alexander Lodygin and in 1878 by Joseph Wilson Swan, among others), and into heat in vacuum tube devices.


  2. A light bulb filament is made of a strand of tungsten, a strong, tough metal. When approximately 120 volts and a high current run through the tungsten, the current encounters a lot of resistance, measured in ohms. This resistance takes away some energy from the current and turns into heat. This heat is what gives a light bulb its glow.
