    SS is for "Ship,Submersible "

    SSN is "Ship, Submersible, Nuclear"


  2. USS Enterprise.  CVN-65.  Originally designed as a diesel but while under construction was changed to be the first nuke carrier.

  3. As a side note, you can tell what powers a ship by the letter-number designator.  Above example is CVN-65, USS Enterprise.   CV is the code for aircraft carrier.  CVN means Aircraft Carrier, Nuclear powered.  Same with subs.  SS is attack sub, SSN, is Attack Sub Nuclear powered.
