  1. You mean the Black Library books, don't you?

Well, there's not "first" book, as such.  Whilst there is a loose chronology to the different stories, the various story arcs don't really impact on each other.  If you want to read the "Slayer" novels (mostly by Bill King), then you should probably read them in order, starting with Trollslayer.  Likewise with CL Werner's vampires series and the other linked sets.  But there's no strict order in which the sets themselves need to be read.

Personally, I'd recommend starting with Bill King's Slayer novels about Gotrek and Felix and their multifarious adventures. Mainly because they manage to touch upon just about every venue, aspect, race, faction and class of Old World society at some point along the way.  But there's also the superb "Beast in Velvet" by Jack Yeovil (the pseudonym of Kim Newman) - an old novel but widely considered one of the best: it's a detective story that draws deeply upon real-world parody whilst keeping a deadly serious heart.

If you like the undead, then "Drachenfels" and its sequel, "Genevieve Undead" is an eye-opening glimpse into the secret world of the vampires.

Otherwise, take you pick and enjoy!

  2. Are you talking about Warhammer Fantasy, or Warhammer 40,000?  Novels, or the game?  Assuming you mean Fantasy....

If its the game, you need the Rulebook.  Or the starter set called "Battle for Skull Pass".

If you mean the novels, there's not really a "beginning".  Every race has their own history and storyline.  For example, the beginning for the Elves would eventually talk about the civil war (the split between the Dark Elves and the High Elves).

If you want to read some novels, a link to the Black Library is here:

All of the Malus Darkblade books are good (its about the Dark Elves...they're eeeevil).

    Hope this helps!
