I have a B. Sc. in Biology from Iraq, Baghdad University. I am intending to immigrate to the US, the process will take up to 6 or 7 months from now, a year max. I have a 5 years-experience as a Microbiologist, but the problem is I left my job as a Microbiologist 3 years ago, and started working in another job to save money for the future, the other reason was that the working environment in our hosiptals has become really bad.

My question now is if I will arrive to the US, not sure which state, what are the things that I should do to get back on track and get back to work as a Microbiologist or Bacteriologist? Is there a one process all over America that I should do to approve my credentials? or it will depend on where will I be living? And what is the process itself? should I take some tests? what are the names of these tests? I want to prepare and read for them before my arrival. I would apreciate details as much as possible, plz feel free to contact me on my IM so we can chat more.

  1. I don't know about specific qualifications or tests for your field but it would probably be helpful to put together a very strong American resume.  There are numerous books about how to write a good resume as well as cover letters which you will need when applying for a job.  Then start searching for jobs in your field.  Look at who hires Microbiologists and Bacteriologists.  I don't know much about those jobs but maybe hospitals, universities, chemical companies?  I would say having a degree and work experience will definitely be good enough to get a job.  If you are planning on getting a Master's degree a company you get hired with may be willing to help you pay for it.  Also, if you speak another language you will definitely have a lot more opportunities.  Hope this helps and good luck in your search!

  2. I don't know all the logistics but talking with my students(I am an ESL instructor), it is a lengthy process to get your diploma and documents authenticated.  My best advice is to contact the US embassy in your country because the requirements are different depending on what country you are from.  Some countries are part of an apostille convention so for them the authentication process is a lot less tedious than it is for others.  Also, in order to work here you have to have a company willing to hire you and you have to apply for a work permit.  But again the requirements are different depending on your nationality and it does not matter what state you are going to live in.  These are federal rules and not municipal.
