  1. Let me start out by saying one acre is not enough for a horse and horses should never be kept alone, and are a hure investment and responsibility.  But to start i would read up on the sport and learn to ride comfortably at a walk trot canter and gallop - get some proffessional lessons, and make sure you have all of the equiptment. Next set up the barrels in regulation style and practice at a walk, trot, and canter and continue to get faster until you are comfertable.  You can look up schooling shows around your area to get used to showing.  Runing in shows that have prize money actually costs a lot and is not easy.  Also remember that if you only barrel race with your horse, it will get board.  Do trail rides and arena work too.

  2. First, learn how to ride a horse properly, learn the basics of walk, trot, canter, leads, leg cues, etc.

Next step - find someone who competes in barrel racing and see if they will teach you, or if they will recommend a riding instructor.

Third, get a good horse.  Yes, that is third, not first.  Learn first, then get a horse that suits your ability.  If you start out on a finished barrel horse before you are ready for it, both you and the horse could get hurt.

    Good luck!

  3. When you are ready to start thinking about buying a barrel horse, find yourself an older, finished/seasoned barrel horse.  The barrel racing community is huge, all over the us, you can find experienced and accomplished barrel racers who can help you find the right horse.  Before you buy, ask the seller if you can watch the horse compete at a jackpot/show prior to making a decision.  You want something that is honest and solid in the alley way and makes a nice pattern.... don't worry about the speed when you are starting out.  Learn the pattern and the correct way before you start worrying about clocking faster times.  There are many, many clinics across the us with the pros and most of them have instructional videos that can help you learn a great deal.

    Good luck!

  4. Getiing into barrel racing takes an athletic horse and a willing one, it is also a team effort so you must be willing to work and be patient for it all to come together. Start slow and build off your comfort zone as well as your horse's. Walk the pattern and move up slowly as you perfect it, if you work together as a team you will do well!
