What is the first step to be a best participator in a group?

i always avoiding to join in a group because... i should not forget or leave from my life time ambition to do something to the poor people.. whether the group members will really help or guide if i join in a group.

You can post really good advice / information through reading books / researching the net. You may be a good participator by sending lots messages too.
