  1. Portugal, Spain, France, and Britain

The Dutch also tried (New Amsterdam) but didn't get very far

  2. I think it would be Portugal with Prince Henry the Navigator and his advanced technology for sailing.  Prince Henry developed and perfected many of the navigation tools that made crossing the Atlantic possible.

Portugal was geographicaly well placed for sea exploration - it faces the Atlantic Ocean.

Portuguese explorers were the first to sail down the African coast and establish early colonies in Africa and India.

  3. - Spain

    - Portugal

    - France

    - United Kingdom

    - Netherlands

Those are most powerful European nations at that time.

Spain colonized our country for 333 years.

  4. I'm not great with my european history from that time period, but I would guess the brittish would be the first as the roman empire began to retreat. Spain, France and Portugal, the other early major western European colonial powers, are closer to rome and I believe formed their empires later. It wouldn't surprise me if Portugal was first, though, as they are on the far side of spain and fairly well insulated from the roman empire. Sorry I can't be more sure.

  5. Portugal, then Spain.
