I have updated to SP3 on my XP Laptop and have noticed now and again the outline of a small window appears for a millisecond before vanishing, It comes and goes so fast but is still noticeable, anyone know what it could be? My virus scanner isn't picking up anything so I don't think its a virus.

  1. It might be a hardwear conflict with your video card because windows updated your system files maybey your video card may not be able to handle it and sometimes its normal

  2. Well, without more details, it is kind of hard to tell. It could be almost anything. It probably is a program that is part of Windows XP that runs and finishes quickly, so it closes itself. If you want to make sure it isn't a virus, then make sure to check for updates to the virus scanner and scan the entire computer. If you want to figure out exactly what it is, then the only thing I can think of is to download a screen recording program, and record the screen. After you see the window again, just save the recording and go to the point when it appeared (probably near the end of the recording) and go through the recording frame by frame until you find a frame where you can read it.

  3. All sorts of programs will open and close while you're using your computer. it's called "multi-tasking", and it basically means you have other stuff going in the background while you're doing whatever you're doing.

You shouldn't worry as long as your virus protection indicates you're ok.

Be sure you clean your computer daily, to get rid of junk, and malicious software.

But I see such "flashes" multiple times a day. It's not something you need to worry yourself about.

You'll notice the same sort of "flashing" when you:

      1 log in

      2 boot up

It's all part of how the computer functions.

  4. Depends on the context.

Some programs write to the command line (Run->cmd) or open windows themselves, but immediately hide or close them because the code is fast-running.
