What is the fractional equivalent of 12.5%?

I know what the answer is, but I don't understand how to work it in order to obtain the answer.

BTW, this is not really a homework help question. I am study for the HOBET examination and this was a sample question, but I don't know the steps to obtain the answer.

  1. 125/1000 = 5/40 = 1/8.


  2. x percent = x per 100

    12 per cent = 12 per 100 = 12/100

    12.5 per cent = (12 + 0.5) per 100 = (12+0.5)/100

    =(12 + (1/2))/100

    =(25/2)/100

    =25/200

    =1/8

    =0.125

  3. since percent is calculated by division then multiplication by 100, to get from a percent to a ratio, divide by 100.

    0.125

    or 125/1000

    or 5/40

    or 1/8
