  1. Frequency Modulation

  2. Frequency Modulation Radio band in the United States is from 87.5 megahertz to 108.0 megahertz. (One megahertz equals one million cycles per second).  Stations are assigned odd number frequencies (88.1, 88.3, 88.5, etc.) 75 kilohertz wide.  The modulation for the stereo signal is then allowed to vary from 0 to 15 Kilohertz for the left plus right channel, and from 23 to 53 Kilohertz for the left minus the right channel.  A mono receiver picks up only the L+R signal.  A stereo reciever picks up both L+R and L-R, adds them together to get the left channel only and subtracts to get the right channel.

The frequency range 59 khz to 75 khz is used for other purposes usually centered on 67 khz.  A special receiver is required to pick up this frequency range and not available to the general public.

  3. It stands for frequency modulation.

Frequency modulation (FM) moves information over a wave by changing its frequency.  By comparison, AM, which stands for  amplitude modulation, varies the amplitude while the frequency remains constant.
