  1. A seeds purpose is to protect and support the tiny plant embryo housed inside them and to provide nutrients to the seedling during the stages of germination.

    Some seeds also aid in dispersal (eg Acacia ligulata) though this is usually the function of the fruit.

    The basic structure of a seed includes a hard seed coat (testa), nutrient store (endosperm) and plant embryo which includes the immature root (radicle) and shoot (plumule). For a more comprehensive list of bits, please see the second source link.
