An IT operator helps to maintain the offices network.  The network is a communication system that every ones work stations (computers) are connected to.  Through this system, you can have for the sake of example, one printer in the office that everyone prints to.  If the printer is currently printing a job from someones work station and you hit 'print' from your work station, the information you sent is stored temporarily on the servers memory until the current job is done printing.  As soon as the first job is finished, your job automatically is sent to the printer.  Sometimes this communication network breaks down and is the job of the IT operator to fix the problem.
