Interestingly the prolactin receptor is widely expressed in many cell types.

to put it simply, it helps females to produce milk in their mammary glands .  they use this to nurse their young.  it occurs through a process known as lactogenesis and works along with the hormone oxytocin, which is a neurotransmitter in the brain that has not been studied extensively.
