  1. It cleans your blood, destroys old red blood cells and fights infection.

    Before birth, foetuses produce red and white blood cells in their spleens,but then just before birth, the spleen loses its ability to make red blood cells and bone marrow takes over this job.

    You hear of people in accidents getting a ruptured spleen--it has to be removed in that case and the person lives OK without it but is more vulnerable to infection.
