  1. Water filters clean impurities from water, such as particles or dirt in simple filters, and chemicals in more complex filters.

  2. Filters are used to remove suspended particulates in water.  They are composed of screens with tiny holes, measured in microns, to remove contaminants.  The smaller the holes the more effective a water filter.  When water is passed through the filter, contaminants stick to the surface of the filter while clean water flows to a receiving tank or is dispensed from the tap.

Filter media could be activated carbon filters, reverse osmosis, and carbon block filters.

Most of the filter brands do work well if you follow the manufactuers' specifications.  Depends on the manufactures, water characteristics, or volume of water being used, most filter last between 3 months and 12 months.

Filter may not work well if you attempt to overuse it.  If you don't change the filter as often as recommended, your filtered water may be as bad as the non-filtered water.
