  1. That depends on which cell type you are talking about.  In all cells it is required for transport of nutrients through the plant.  In leaves and other photosynthetic cells it is required for photosynthesis.  In the stems of some plants it is required for keeping the plant stiff.  That is done by osmotic pressure.
