  1. Most Line-of-Sight (LOS), point-to-point microwave systems are used for backhauling cellphone calls from the base-station to the central office which then connects to the telephone network.  These are the round dish antennas that you see at a base-station antenna tower. Keep in mind that the tower has the antenna and most the electronics are actually inside a small shed at the bottom of the tower.

Your cellphone communicates with the nearest base-station, which is also a microwave system, but it can still work without having line-of-sight.  Cellphone to base-station is point-to-multipoint, i.e. one basestation to many cellphones.

Another LOS microwave systems is reception of satellite TV from the bird in the sky to your dish unit on the roof.  Most microwave systems that operate beyond 10 GHz are normally only LOS, i.e. you have to point an antenna to make it work as the signal loss is very high.
