  1. The majority of Germans these days accepts the current borders as they are. Germany also officially renounced all claims on these territories.

Directly after the war it was hard to accept for many people and my mother who was born in 1941 grew up in a region with many refugees from East Prussia, and she still had to study the old German geography of these regions at school and sing local songs from there etc. But now seriously I think most of the people are just glad there is a stable peace now and all those of us who are younger are just used to the current borders and see them as normal. Having lived in Germany for most of my life, I don't know a single person who seriously thinks Germany should claim these territories back. I have seen however that the radically right-wing National Democrat Party (NPD) would like these territories back, but they are a really extremist group.

I've also been to Kaliningrad once and still have a (Russian) friend there, I saw lots of old Germans there who went there to see the place that was once their home, but it's all peaceful, my friend there has also studied in Germany for some semesters and has not experienced any hostilities.

I have also heard the same from Polish people who come from formerly German towns that they are usually not met with any hostility in Germany when they say where they come from.

  2. The war is over - they lost and the newly unified Germany sign a treaty with Poland over the issue of the borders.

Kaliningrad is now a Russian city, no German population, so it will remain Russian.

I think that Germans are more interested in the future than recovering past territories, especially when those territories are occupied by nuclear states.
