  1. Carbohydrates have the general formula (C H2 O)n. They are made up of monomer units, usually pentose or hexose sugars. Pentoses are C5 H10 O5 and hexoses are C6 H12 O6. Carbohydrates are often multimers or polymers of simple sugars. e.g. cellulose is multiple glucoses strung together.
