  1. Nucleic acids are made up of a sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base.

The sugar determines whether it is RNA or DNA - DNA has deoxyribose, RNA has ribose.

    The phosphate remains constant.

The nitrogenous base determines which nucleic acid it is - thymine (DNA), uracil (RNA), or adenine, guanine and cytosine (both DNA and RNA).

The sugar bonds to the phosphate group and the nitrogenous base in two condensation reactions, to make a nucleotide.
