Question:

What is the general view of the American public on the war in Iraq?

In the UK, the vast majority of people are now against the war, with many who once supported it knowing being against it, however there is still 100% support for the great work the troops are doing.

What is the general view of the US public? Do you think it was a good idea in the short/long term? Have you changed your opinion? Do you want your troops withdrawn or not?

Thanks for any replies.

  1. Overwhelming majority of Americans AGAINST OCCUPATION OF IRAQ FROM DAY ONE.

  2. It has been proven that Bush and Co. fabricated evidence to go to war, yet we as American citizens can't do anything about it. We support the troops over there and wish their return soon. And hope that we will be able to charge Bush and Co. as war criminals when his reign of terror is over.

  3. simply put...conservatives understand it, liberals dont.  liberals used it as a election(whining) point without understanding the real problems with al qaeda.  conservatives understand al qaeda and are working to fix it.

  4. View of the Ameican public, does that include the Americans in Iraq?

  5. most don't like it but it had it be done

  6. bad and stupid idea from day 1 and now we're about to be embroiled in a conflict with iran, which in turn will likely cause oil prices to further hike up.  let's just get out of there and leave the fighting to the jews.  now the gov't wants the troops to stay longer (possibly indefinitely) in iraq so they can fight iran, essentially stripping the iraqi people of their sovereignty.  we have a lot to be ashamed of.

  7. It seems we have seen a trend just like you described here in the U.S.   We all support the troops, but support for the Iraq war has dwindled as the months and even years have gone by.

According to the most recent Gallup poll this April, 63% of responders believed the war to be a mistake, 36% think it wasn't, and 1% were undecided.

Looking at the downward slope of the line showing percentage of people supporting the war, I suspect the numbers are even lower now.

I personally believe the war was a mistake, and not good in the short or long term.  We are spending too much money on an ineffectual war that is being mishandled both militarily and financially.  However, I am worried about the effects of pulling our troops out altogether, because it might cause instability.  But I'm not sure if it would be worth it even then.  I guess I would be nominally in favor of a withdrawal, though.

  8. I tend to view it as a n**i like genocide against people of the Muslim faith.

  9. Ask this same question again after the terrorists destroy one of our cities with a nuclear bomb.

The U.S. government is going to waste tax dollars on something - maybe next year universal healthcare - there is always something to get excited about in this country.

  10. Imperialism (no matter the degree) creates more enemies than it vanquishes.
