  1. What an iconic speech. Lincoln craftily invoked the principles of human equality while redefining the Civil War as a struggle not just to preserve the union but to bring about a rebirth of freedom that ensured equality while dedicating a national cemetery. It is amazing that he did this in a 2 or 3 minute speech....  


  2. You should read it for yourself, but bear in mind that it was following the first battle of the Civil War that was fought on Northern land, and a war that wasn't altogether popular in the North or generally successful.  

    The address was about getting popular opinion behind an unpopular war, making the people of the North forget that they were the aggressors, and make it about "preserving the union", even though many believed that there was no real authority to do so by force.
