In short the greenhouse gases we are causing are stopping heat escaping from our atmosphere and bouncing back to earth causing it to become hotter and hotter.

Global warming is a media catch phrase the relates to the overall warming of the planet due to the high levels of carbon dixoide in the atmosphere.  It's also referred to as the greenhouse affect; it lets the radiation of the sun in, but traps the warm air rising - hence warming the planet.

One of the problems with this catch phrase is that is affects local climates in different ways, ie, it's not perceived to be "Warming"; it could - for example - cool the UK down by diverting the gulf stream.

It also causes unusual weather due to the "Rapid" increase in tempurature.  This can cause a lot of rain and storms, etc. (ie; not hot and sunny).

These two aspects often gets people "Nay-saying" on global warming.

Personally I think it's very real; with the only answer being a dramatic change to lifestyles across the planet.

But the bigger problem is out approach to the environment.  Global warming in only one problem, as was the hole in the Ozone Layer in the 80's and 90's (And it's still there).

we now have massive waste problems, an increasing number of dead zones in the oceans around the world and air pollution in some places is extreme; you may well see a lot at the Olympics this year.  

we also have an increasingly large radiactive waste debt that growing; all these Nuclear  Reactors generate a lot of waste that takes millennia to become safe.

I have no idea as to what's next.

You can't prevent it. The Earth behaves like a giant thermostat that heats up and cools down over millions of years. If it is warming now, us mere mortals can do nothing to stop it. Paying loads of extra tax for your petrol won't prevent mother nature from having her way.

Do not listen to all this pseudo science, it is little more than mumbo jumbo mechanics, and a way of attracting more funding, without doing the work needed, to prove you have something that needs to be explored by science.........
